Day 2 of Niue’s National Fisheries Summit
Today continued day 2 of the high level national consultations for Niue’s National Fisheries Summit.
The event took place at the Scenic Matavai Resort Conference room. Director of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Poi Okesene conducted the opening formalities.
Speeches were delivered by Minister for Natural Resources Hon. Esa Mona Ainuu, Director General of the Pacific Islands Forum Dr Manu Tupou-Roosen and Premier Hon. Dalton Tagelagi.
In her speech, Minister Ainuu commended Niue’s efforts in protecting its marine life and resources.
“As we strive to achieve and maximise the benefits and opportunities from our EEZ, Niue is a leader in this space and we need to celebrate the efforts we have put into ensuring that we continue the investment we have made over the years to ensure that our fisheries continue to meet our requirements, that our efforts contributes to the collective regional and international efforts to ensure the sustainability of our marine resources,” said Minister Ainuu.
Premier Hon. Dalton Tagelagi shared words of encouragement for the fisheries sector of Niue.
“The opportunities are out there. You’ve seen the development that has been happening and this is one. I am so happy to see and learn about the discussions today. The pathway is already there.”
“This is how we can make it happen and this is how we can maximise the benefits for us today and for those tomorrow,” said Premier Tagelagi.
The national fisheries summit this week has included consultations regarding Niue’s fisheries priorities and aspirations on a national, regional and international level. Highlighting consultations on Niue’s fisheries management, development and operation.
Key stakeholders, government departments, NGOs representatives and other key agencies attended the summit today.
Tomorrow will be the closing day for the summit.
