STEPS Survey begins in Makefu village today

The Niue Health Department is encouraging everyone from the ages of 15 to 69 years to come and get screened. screening begins from 6am to 10am.

It was an early morning start to the first day of the STEPS Survey at the Makefu village church Hall today.

The survey will raise awareness about the importance of people getting screened for Non communicable diseases.

Head of  Public Health-Grizelda Mokoia told BCN News they are expecting 60 participants daily from the screening. 

Mokoia explains on the various screening that will be done in each stations.

“Questions will be on four risk factors which is diet, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol. In addition to that we have for the women two questions on cervical cancer in relations to the access of services. And also our dental health team,”

The staff will be using tablets to answer the questionnaire. A team from the World Health Organnisation (WHO) and a staff from the Pacific Community (SPC)are also on the island to monitor the STEPS survey, providing training as well to the staff last week.

The Niue Health department is encouraging everyone from all the villages from the ages of 15 to 69 years to come and get screened. Doors open from 6am to 10am.

About 20 staff from the health department will be part of the month-long screening around the island. The next village to be screened is Tuapa village tomorrow.
