Aliluki Project expected to be completed next year
The Project is expected to be completed by March next year funded by KIWA Initiative.
The Aliluki Site at Alofi South is taking shape if you drive or walk past the site daily.
BCN News reached out to Oma Tafua Founder-Fiafia Rex on an update about the site.
The Ecopreneur says there are 3-4 workers currently contracted for maintenance, mulching and composting.
“Removal is manually done in order for sustainable land management practices but of course very expensive way to do it,” she said.
The project plans to remove the invasive’s and beautify it as much as possible as a commemorative site.
Recently they were hit by a consumption tax for a ride on mower and hope to be waivered for this consumption tax.
She said they are mindful also of their plans as it costs money so they have to be strategic with what can be done hence they will be looking for volunteers by June.
The Project hopes to establish a memorial walk for families that had lived there and survived Cyclone Heta, a place people can come and enjoy an oceanic look out and also for all Niueans to be proud of their efforts to beautify the site.
“It would be good to partner with Niue Tourism closer to the project end date as the idea is for Eco-tours in the very near future to raise awareness of the area, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, bio-diversity preservation and ecosystems protection,” Rex said.
The Aliluki site was the hardest hit during Cyclone Heta in 2004.
