Niue Police Chief-Timothy Wilson has confirmed to BCN News that during the holiday period last year, only a few motor vehicle accidents were reported during this period with no major injuries.
Wilson said there was a reduction of these incidents from what they have seen in the past.
He said most of these motor vehicle accidents were alcohol related so it’s an issue that Police are still trying to address with the consumption of alcohol and driving on the road.
He briefly explained on the overall operation for Police in 2023
He said they didn’t have a lot of major crime issues or anything this time, with only one person at any time in prison this year, awaiting bail hearing.
“We have had just your normal stuff, some car accidents, driving issues, alcohol related issues but pretty much just similar to that we’ve had throughout in the past.” he said.
Also as Niue is still in its cyclone season and despite no cyclone warning for the island, Wilson has emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and to be prepared in case one does come as we can still be affected by cyclones later in the cyclone season.
