Year 13 student Hine Makaia sets the national javelin record, smashing his own school record.

On the final day of the Niue High School annual sports and athletics last Monday, Year 13 student Hine Makaia broke both the school record and his personal best in the javelin event with 63.09 metres and setting the national record.

Hine Makaia from Avatele set the first NHS record in 2018 with an over 50-metre throw.

In the same year, he competed in the NZ Secondary schools track and field championships in Dunedin when he was only 15 years old where he won the gold in the juniors division for his throw of 52.79 metres.

Hine had been setting and breaking the school records since and improving his throw.

In 2019 he competed again in the NZ secondary schools track and field championships in Wellington, winning bronze with a throw of 51.66 metres.

Hine Makaia is the Team captain for Pua and is in his final year of Niue high school. His 63.09 metre javelin record will no doubt be one of the highlights of his time as a student at Niue High School.
