Niue makes the list of the 2020 Top 100 Global Sustainable Destinations

Niue is one of the top 100 sustainable destinations in the world and the only Pacific island to make the top 100 list this year.

Organised by greendestinations.org of the Netherlands, the competition is held under the auspices of the Top 100 Partnership, with special contributions by: Green Destinations, Quality Coast, Travel Mole, Vision on Sustainable Tourism, Trave life, ITB Berlin, Asian Ecotourism Network, Ecotourism Australia and GLP Films.

The Sustainable Top 100 competition is organised to showcase sustainable tourism stories and good practices of destinations, as inspiring examples to others, to tour operators and to travellers.

A small celebration brunch was held at the Niue Tourism office this morning to recognise this achievement for Niue.

Acting Director of the Tourism Office Moka Laufoli said that this is indeed a great achievement for Niue congratulating everyone for their involvement in the process.

She said that Niue’s application was a joint effort with the consulting firm TRC who contributed to Niue’s submission.

Nominations were evaluated by the Sustainable Top 100 Team, country experts and Green Destination Partners, coordinated by Green Destinations.

This year, the selection was more than ever determined by the quality, effectiveness and transferability of the Good Practice Stories that were submitted by the destinations.

Niue Tourist Authority Board Chairperson Vanessa Marsh made special mention of the initiatives such as the Dark Skies and the Moana Mahu Marine conservation area contributed to Niue being nominated as in the top 100 sustainable destinations of the world.

This is the sixth year of the list of Sustainable Destinations Top 100 but this year is the first time the list was unveiled online from Bodrum in Turkey and watched by a small team of Niue tourism officials including the Minister of Tourism Premier Tagelagi at 3am this morning.

Premier Tagelagi was and happy and upbeat about the announcement this morning toasting the momentous occasion.

Niue is the only Pacific island to make the list this year with New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty along and three Australian tourism destinations Douglas shire, Lord Howe island and Townsville.
