In marking World Press Freedom day this week, we share highlights and challenges of working in the media in Niue.
Former BCN journalist and one of the youngest to be recruited- Sariah Magaoa joined the news team in 2022, fresh out from graduation at the University of Auckland, she came back home to serve her people and was a much needed addition to the small team then.
She now works as a multimedia journalist at the Pacific Media Network in Auckland. One of the highlights for her was sharing stories in the community and enhancing her skills and knowledge in the field.
She highlighted one of the challenges was meeting deadlines when you covered a story on the same day running for radio and TV. Also working in a makeshift building where space was limited was a challenge, however resilience for her was the key.

BCN cameraman-Tifaga Tupuiliu who started working for BCN in 2009 said that he enjoys his job especially when he was still single because he was able to cover all the major events on the island.
Faga says that one of the challenges for him in his job is not having time to spend with his young family. He would like to take his children to showdays or national events but he is often working. Tifaga is encouraging young people to join the BCN team as camera and editing team.

And that is our short series featuring some of BCNs former and current staff as part of our Press Freedom awareness week.
