Premier meets with Tonga Prime Minister

Premier Hon. Dalton Tagelagi in his meeting with the Tonga Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni yesterday in Suva, expressed Niue’s thoughts and prayers following the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano earlier this year, gifting $100,000 Tongan pa’anga (TOP) dollars to help with Tonga’s recovery response.
According to a government press release issued yesterday Fiji time, an additional support of TOP $60,000 will be sent directly to families in Tonga of Tongan nationals residing on the island to help with their recovery.
Some of the key discussions held between Premier Tagelagi and Prime Minister Sovaleni were on Niue and Tonga’s maritime boundary, and the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between Niue and the Kingdom of Tonga with the purpose of promoting mutual understanding and strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Premier Hon. Tagelagi thanked the Tonga Prime Minister for the Government of Tonga’s assistance in a patrol boat to assist with the Taiwanese fishing vessel wreckage at Beveridge Reef on the 31st of May 2022.
