Heavy rain due to trough of low pressure
The current heavy rain being experienced is due to a trough of low pressure or a dense cloud band that has moved over Niue.
According to Niue Meteorology Director Rossy Mitiepo this has developed into a bigger and broader band as of yesterday, associated thunderstorm and lightning occurring.
“We will be expecting up to 50mm of rain and unlike the recent low lying flooding of over 100mm of rain. However, this is a prediction, but we will continue to monitor the situation.
The duration of the rain may take up until tomorrow with the support of the high pressure system pushing the cloud band eastwards and away from Niue.” said Mitiepo
Cyclones are very rare to occur outside of the season, however Mitiepo said it is possible for its development.
