General election on Saturday 2nd May
Out going speaker of the Niue Assembly- Hon. Hima Douglas
After many months of anticipation, the island will go to the polls on Saturday May 2nd for the general election.
Last week on Wednesday at the final sitting of the 18th Niue Assembly, the Speaker Hon. Hima Douglas announced that the assembly will be dissolved on the 27th of March and the general election will be held on Saturday May 2nd.
The date was somewhat of a surprise because in December last year, Prime Minister Tagelagi had told BCN News that he was looking at a June general election and it was announced in the first sitting of the assembly this year, that the prime minister wanted the assembly to sit the full 3 years.
Fourteen members of the assembly attended the final sitting last week. Minister Esa Mona Ainuu was in Auckland and returned on Friday while Minister Crossley Tatui remains in Auckland on medical leave. Common roll members O’love Jacobsen and Billy Talagi are also both in Auckland.
Member for Makefu Tofua Puletama and member for Alofi North Tutuli Heka are also overseas.
This week Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi is overseas and will return on the 27th March. Minister Sonya Talagi is Actinig prime minister and acting minister of finance until then.
Mr Ricky Makani remains as acting minister for the ministry of infrastructure until Minister Tatui returns.
Mr Talaititama Talaiti is Acting Minister of Central Agencies and state owned enterprises until the prime minister returns to the island.
