Alofi and Vaiea share victory at the 2022 Juniors Mixed Touch Tournament

A scorching day for a scorching victory as Alofi Jetts and Vaiea take home a stunning win for the Juniors Mixed Touch Tournament.

Last Saturday, families and friends gathered at the Niue High School Fields to cheer on their respective villages and teams as the first touch tournament of the year took place.

With an overall 13 teams participating, the Juniors Mixed Tournament were split into two grades: 5 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years.

The five teams that participated in the 5 to 8 years grade include Alofi Jetts, Alofi Rockets, Mutalau, Hakupu and Tama-Ava. The eight teams for the 9 to 12 years grade include the Alofi Bulletz, Alofi Gunz, Tuapa, Lakepa, Liku, Hakupu, Vaiea and Tama-Ava.

The teams from Alofi dominated the competitions in the 5- to 8-year-olds with Alofi Jetts winning, Tama Avatele in second place and another Alofi team Alofi Rockets came in third.

And in the 9- to 12-year-old category, Vaiea was just too good coming in first place, Alofi Bulletz in second place and Lakepa in third place.

Organizer Lynsey Talagi told BCN news that the Junior touch tournament was a successful tournament, and it was a great opportunity for our juniors to build on their sporting skills.

Tama Mana representative Vanessa Marsh also told BCN news that “there is a lot of emerging skills and talent from the young players and Tama Mana is keen to help and keep developing these skills and growing the game of touch”.

The Junior Mixed Touch Tournament 2022 is the second tournament hosted by the Niue Island Touch Association and Tama Mana. The tournament was also greatly supported by Australia’s Pacific Sports Public Diplomacy Fund.

Next on the Niue Island Touch Association calendar is the Open Men and Open Women’s touch tournament on Saturday this week.
