Edwards eyes the NZ national title after winning the North Island Junior Powerlifting Championships

The Edwards duo of competitive lifters with powerlifter older sister Maxine and younger sister Ramsi in weightlifting have done it again. This time it’s 19-year-old Maxine who became New Zealand’s Junior Female North Island champion earlier this month.

Maxine won the gold medal in the junior women’s category joining more than 100 other competitors from across the North island in the three days of the North Island Powerlifting Championships held in Auckland.

Maxine Edwards competed against 11 lifters in the 84 plus junior women’s category winning gold and achieving personal best in the back squat with a personal best lift of 190kgs. She also achieved another personal best in the bench press with 87.5kg and 170kg in the dead lift to combine another personal best total of 447.5kgs.

Edwards told BCN news that her next goal is to compete in the NZ nationals in August. She is now focused on training with her coaching team of Argo Pahetogia and her father Tony Edwards.

Maxine’s younger sister 14 year old Ramsi won the NZ secondary school competitions in September last year and won bronze and set the new NZ under 15’s record at the New Zealand National Olympic Weightlifting competitions in November last year.

Maxine Edwards told BCN news that she is grateful for her family support and also her team of supporters from Niue and in New Zealand, with the Niue Powerlifting Federation and the support of her local gym Decile One Gym sponsoring her membership that she is able to train for up-coming competitions.
