No Tsunami Alert for Niue

The Chief of Police and Head of NDMO Tim Wilson informed the Village Council messenger group that there was no tsunami alert for Niue from this earthquake. 

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurred in Tonga yesterday Morning at around 9:47am, 70km northwest of Fangale’ounga.

According to Radio NZ, the US Geological Survey said the quake was 112 kilometers deep.

However the tsunami warning for Tonga was canceled by the Tonga’s MetService.

The Chief of Police and Head of Niue Disaster Meteorology Office- Tim Wilson informed the Village Council messenger group that there was no tsunami alert for Niue from this earthquake. 

The same message was posted on the Niue Meteorology Service Facebook page yesterday.  

Several locals took to social media yesterday morning asking if there was a Tsunami warning because they felt the tremor.
