Niue Police Chief-Timothy Wilson says the machine is the first of its kind in the Pacific and was built specifically for Niue.
The 5 machines were brought in from Europe that include two x-ray scanners for the check in area, one for bags and one for oversized bags, and three ion trace detection devices scanners that will test for explosives and drugs.
Principal Advisor for Aviation Security in the Pacific Islands-Athol Glover and his four member team conducted trainings with the Niue Police department on the use of the machines last week.
A handing over ceremony was held last week Thursday at the airport attended by the Minister of Infrastructure-Crossley Tatui and other cabinet Ministers and various stakeholders. Also present was the New Zealand High Commissioner to Niue-Mark Gibb.
The machines were funded by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Zealand at a cost of almost a million dollars.
