Renowned Artist-Mark Cross is currently working on reviving and developing the Hikulagi sculpture site in Liku that focuses on the importance of using waste materials to create artwork.

An ongoing Auction of his painting and artwork is currently underway to raise funds for the project.

The Project Manager says they have raised about six thousand dollars so far by auctioning some of his old New Zealand drawings and water colors subject from the 1980’s and 90’s.

The Hikulagi Park was established in 1996 by members of the then Tahiono Arts Collective, a small group of artists and art enthusiasts who had returned to their Pacific home, countering the trend of urban drift that has devastated many rural and island populations in the Pacific.

Cross says most of the sculpture is made from the inorganic waste created by contemporary consumer society.

He is currently in New Zealand for an exhibition in April and work will begin in May. He hopes to establish a non-profit organisation as well.

Cross says there are few volunteers helping out on the site, all funds collected from the auction will directly go to developing the site.

The ongoing project hopes to extend land development in the area for more sculptures and to promote discussion on pollution, climate change and human coexistence. The Sculpture site is free for the public to visit.
