After just one year of taking up Powerlifting, Samuel Singh has secured the first medal for Team Niue at the 2023 South Pacific Games last night.

The 25 year-old New Zealand-based athlete from Namukulu said it was an emotional and proud moment for him.

He spoke with BCN today about his performance and win.

“It feels surreal, the emotions, it was a really good battle against Solomon Islands for the bronze medal”

“I am self-taught, I’ve been watching videos on Youtube, really learning as much information as I can and it’s gone pretty well obviously,” he said.

Singh won Bronze in his 83 kg division, gold went to Nauru’s -Deamo Baguga and Marc Lisan scooped silver for Tahiti.

Singh’s story of only taking up the sport last year is quite impressive as he had started with Bodybuilding then switched his interest to Powerlifting later.

“I only started training for Powerlifting last year, so I did body building nationals last year, after that I started doing Powerlifting training because I saw that Nauru was really strong and thought it would be good to get into it”

He then contacted Tony Edwards of the Niue Powerlifting Federation expressing his interest and was able to be part of the team representing Niue at the SPG.

Singh’s focus now is to get a coach that can take him to the next level. He thanks everyone for the support especially to the Niue Powerlifting Federation and he will definitely bring his medal if he visits Niue. He flies back to Auckland tomorrow.
