Students raise awareness on climate change impacts
We are not drowning, we are fighting.
This is the message year 6 students at Niue Primary School are trying to spread on social media as part of a climate change project they have been learning in school for this term.
Each term there is a different theme on climate change for the students.
Head of the Department of Senior Primary School Mele Yeates said the theme stems from the 350 warriors organization that raises climate change awareness which they have liaised with and Ina Vakaafi for the project.
Each student has taken to social media with a video talking about how climate change has affected their community and raising awareness on the global issue.
Year 6 students Velvet Tatuki, Summer Ikihele, Viola Liuaga, and Troy Tatui said they enjoyed creating their own videos to raise awareness on an important issue and to share how it is affecting their community.
They believe the impacts of climate change affects aspects of the way of life in Niue highlighting the last category 5 tropical cyclone heta that hit Niue had destroyed homes, livelihoods and the old museum which housed cultural artifacts and recorded history.
