Niue pro bono lawyer Dr Gerard McCoy dies of heart attack
Hong Kong Brrister specializing in Constitutional law, Gerard McCoy has died of a heart attack at the age of 64.
McCoy was reportedly found to have blood cancer last year. He underwent bone marrow transplant a few months ago and he managed to recover and was subsequently discharged from the Queen Mary Hospital.
He was planning to return to the law firm next Monday to resume work, but unfortunately, he had a heart attack last night. He left behind two children and his wife and his son who is also a practising barrister.
One of the final cases Gerard McCoy defended in the Niue High Court was as the defence counsel for Mr Ainuu on firearm charges in March 2019.
BCN News was made aware of his passing by the Secretary to Justice Darren Tohovaka this morning.
