This was confirmed by Telecom Niue Limited Chief Executive Officer-Anurug Tandon
“There are a few services which Telecom Niue is looking at bringing in the new year, some of them being international roaming, upgrading the network to build redundancy in case of outage and taking care of the increasing data utilization,” Tandon said.
He also mentioned their future plans to replace the copper lines on the island to fiber as this service would help Telecom Niue become a triple player service provider by providing voice data and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) in collaboration with BCN to customers’ homes.
Tandon has also clarified concerns raised by customers on the reason why data bundles come with international calls deals.
He states the local and international minutes are free of cost to the customer, as they have absorbed all cost on the voice calling. The new bundles have a lower price per gigabyte (GB) as compared to the previous bundles, previously a GB of data would cost approximately $4.17 now a GB of data cost $3.17.
“The idea of doing this was to make it simpler for our customers to not have to struggle to buy various bundles for voice, international calls and data.
Also by reducing the number of profiles it has helped Telecom Niue to reduce its cost which it had to incur in US dollars as payment to vendors.”
Tandon said when the 4G network was launched there were issues with voice calling and customers had to depend on using an App to make calls.
“However that app too had an issue as it kept detaching from the network. These issues have been addressed and now a customer having an android phone can call another phone using the app and for customers using an iPhone they can call using their phone dialer.”
The Telecom CEO has also confirmed they have once again become a member of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) next year, a non for profit industry organisation that represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide. This would enable their android customers to make a voice call without using an app.
Tandon says Telecom Niue has been certified as a Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) operator by Apple, a service a lot of other pacific islands are struggling to launch. This service offers the possibility to voice call via the LTE/4G mobile network.
He has also clarified on why certain customers have raised concerns on their data running out fast.
He says most of the streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime movies, YouTube etc. stream in ultra high definition (UHD) as compared to standard definition (SD) previously.
“Streaming typically consumes around 1 GB of data per hour of streaming. high definition (HD) streaming usually requires 3-4 GB of data per hour.
For ultra high definition (UHD) streaming, data usage can reach around 7 GB per hour. Also apps like Facebook and Instagram etc run videos automatically, all that consumes data, hence the reason why data runs out fast”
He says they welcome all feedback by their customers and will work on bringing changes where necessary to address such needs.
