Action on climate change, quality and sustainable infrastructure and building economic resilience are some key areas that the new Australian High Commissioner to Niue -Her Excellency Katy Stuart will be focusing on as she serves her term on the island.
Ms Stuart has been enjoying her stay so far on the island and still can’t believe she is in Niue- a Gem of a country with its kind and warm people.
She also spoke on certain Scholarships programs provided by the Australian Government.
“Currently we have five Australian Awards Pacific Scholarship, we don’t have any for 2024 doing the Australian Awards Masters Programs in Australia ,” she said.
However they are encouraging people to apply for this prestigious award and they would like to increase the uptake of these scholarships. The next round will be advertised next February for the 2025 intake.
Ms Staurt says the sense of community and the pride in traditions is one of the significant takeaways she’s seen while attending some of the events on the island.
“I remember going to their cultural day at their Primary school and seeing the children dance with such strength and just pride in their culture and seeing the same children receive their academic awards.” she added.
Ms Stuart becomes the third resident Australian High Commissioner on the island. She brings with her a wealth of experience having worked as a public servant and most recently as Assistant Director, Green Economy Implementation Section at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has also served abroad in Timor-Leste.
She wishes everyone on the island a very Merry Christmas and to be safe this holiday period.
