The Queen’s Baton arrived in Niue yesterday afternoon via post. The President of Niue’s national sports governing body NISCGA Maru Talagi received the baton and will be in his care for seven days until it departs next week Monday 7th of March.
The Queen’s Baton Relay began on the 7th of October 2021 and was officially opened by the Queen. The baton also contains a personal message by the Queen for the Commonwealth.
The Queen’s Baton Relay is currently on its 294-day journey travelling across the 72 nations of the Commonwealth until returning to Birmingham for the official opening of the Commonwealth Games.
Due to the effects of the global pandemic and COVID-19 travelling restrictions, the Queen’s Baton arrived in Niue via Post, although it would usually be accompanied by a special delegation from Birmingham.
The Niue Post team delivered the Queen’s Baton to Mr. Talagi’s home after 3pm yesterday. The baton arrived in a padlocked box which will not be opened until tomorrow morning at 9am by the Premier and Cabinet Ministers.
The Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay was the last time the baton arrived on Niue without any COVID-19 restrictions.
