BCN was formally established in 1989 and operates the only television and radio station in Niue. Our purpose is to deliver a quality radio and television service — one that informs, educates and entertains the people of Niue and connects the diaspora to home.
Radio services have been operational on the island since the early 1960s. In 1972 the government bought its own AM broadcast transmitter, and in 1995 the permanent Radio Sunshine studio opened at Fonuakula, constructed with the support of the Australian Government. Television broadcasting began in 1990.
The 2020 fire & rebuild
In May 2020 a fire caused extensive damage to our TV studio and operations room. Within a week of the fire, BCN was back on air — and at the end of that same month, we televised the 2020 general election live.
After five years of operating from temporary premises, in September 2025 Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi officially opened the rebuilt BCN studios. The AU$2 million reconstruction was funded by the Australian Government with assistance from the ABC International Development team.
