A new access ramp to one of their evacuation shelters, for the village of Toi
A small gathering at the Toi village Ekalesia church witnessed the blessing of an access ramp, two new doors and the procurement of chairs yesterday 3rd February.
According to the Niue Met office, the construction of ramps was one of the ideas put forward at the national workshop by the Girls and Boy’s Brigades and stakeholders during their planning phase.
“The aim was to provide support for the elderly and those who are at a disadvantage in accessing evacuation shelters and alternative shelters during a natural disaster.
Toi village Ekalesia church was the only applicant for the installation of access ramp but they also asked for ten chairs for the church building.”
In the presence of the member of the Assembly for Toi, Hon. Dion Taufitu, the president of the Ekalesia Niue Rev. Nuka Tauevihi cut the first garland of kapihi followed by the village pastor Rev. Moka Togakilo and assistant pastor Rev. Holo Tafea.
There to witness the event was the Director of Niue Met office Mrs Roslyn Misiepo, and the Director General of the Ministry of Natural Resources Dr. Josie Tamate and a small gathering of the people and friends of the village of Toi.
The project is part of the Niue Meteorological Services Community based Early Warning Systems (CBEWs) and Disaster Risk Reduction and traditional knowledge programs which started in April last year.
The construction work was completed by local contractor Big Boys construction.
This project to build proper access to the building and put in new doors and ten chairs were funded by various partners including SPREP, World Meteorological Organisation, and Canada as part of their community based early warning systems Disaster risk reduction and traditional knowledge programs.
