In honor of Sir Toke’s life of service to Niue, Monday 27th July has been declared a national day of mourning & a public holiday
The Premier Dalton Tagelagi and his Cabinet Ministers have announced that Sir Toke Tufukia Talagi will be accorded a State Funeral.
Cabinet has also announced that in honor of Sir Toke’s life and service to Niue, Monday 27th July 2020 will be declared a national day of mourning and be observed as a Public Holiday.
In making the announcement, Premier Dalton Tagelagi said he is hoping that the country will take advantage of the opportunity to be part of the State Funeral.
‘It is time for us as a small Island State to pause and to reflect on the life of a senior statesman. There is no finer moment than when our people come together to share the burden of grief’, he said.
The State Funeral Service will take place at the Alofi Ekalesia church. Interment will be at the family residence at Fonuakula.
The funeral procession will start from the Cabinet and Parliamentary Services Department – Fale Fono to the Alofi Ekalesia Church. At the request of the family, those taking part in the procession will be limited to the immediate family and those invited to join them.
As a mark of respect, all flags throughout the state will be flown at half-mast on the day of the State Funeral.
Sir Toke’s extended family in Auckland has arranged for a thanksgiving memorial service at the Malaeola community center in Mangere to coincide with the service in Niue.
The service has been arranged on behalf of Sir Toke’s son Nicholas Talagi who manages the family’s business in Auckland.
