“It’s entirely up to Niue how they wish to celebrate its constitution day” : NZ High Commissioner
New Zealand High Commissioner to Niue Kirk Yates says it is entirely up to Niue how they want to celebrate its constitution day.
Yates made the comment following government’s decision to only have the Niue flag raised on the constitution day this Saturday.
The break from the traditional raising of both the Niue and New Zealand flags began last year. According to the Niue government this will continue at the flag raising on Saturday.
Only the Niuean anthem will be sung.
“I think its totally over to Niue to decide how they wish to celebrate their national day and we’re here to pay our respects. The constitution is an important document and its fundamental to Niue and New Zealand’s relationship. It’s a strong and endearing relationship and I think that the fact that we have strong presence here for the 45th celebrations which is a milestone celebration is tantamount to our ongoing healthy relationship.” said Yates
