Niue’s community came together last Thursday to show support for the Toitu te Tiriti hikoi in New Zealand.

The hikoi protests the Act Party’s coalition agreement bill to redefine the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between Maori chiefs and the British Crown.

Around 60 participants joined the rally from Alofi Commercial Centre to Sir Robert’s Wharf to show solidarity with tangata whenua in Aotearoa . The Toitu Te Tiriti hikoi has gained international momentum, with rallies and marches taking place in Sydney, London, Hawaii, the United States and even at Mt Everest.

Yesterday tens of thousands descended in Wellington for the final day of the hikoi to Parliament. The seven day march began in Cape Reinga on November 11 at the top of New Zealand’s north island with thousands joining the march to Parliament throughout the week.
