Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro highlights the flourishing bond between Niue and NZ

“Since 1974 New Zealand has been proud to be Niue’s constitutional partner, the bonds between our two nations have flourished nurtured by our shared history, language, culture and citizenship.”

These were the sentiments shared by the New Zealand Governor General-Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro while addressing guests aduring the 50th commemoration of Niue’s self-government last Saturday.

while addressing the crowd of thousands, Dame Cindy thanked Niue for the invitation to be part of the significant event and was honored to be representing King Charles III who is the head of the Commonwealth on his behalf. She also brought warm greetings

Dame Cindy highlighted major achievements and developments on the island in the past few years including the airport upgrade.

She commended the people of Niue for working to sustain and transfer their cultural heritage and traditions mentioning the village show days as an example.

“This special Pulefakamotu is a time for Niueans to celebrate the legacy of your forebears and look forward to how you might shape the destiny of your nation.” she added.

After the formalities of the the commemoration, Dame Cindy graciously accepted the magnificent galue fafau, measuring about 80 meters wide and 6 meters high alongside Niue Prime Minister-Hon. Dalton Tagelagi.

A tradition only reserved for special occasions, the galue fafau was made by members from across the 13 villages of Niue.

The Governor General arrived last Friday accompanied by her husband Dr Richard Davies and was accorded a traditional welcoming ceremony.

Invited dignitaries included the President of Fiji-His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and his wife Adi Filomena Katonivere who were accorded a traditional welcoming ceremony at the airport last Friday.

Also present from the various diplomatic corp were Special Envoy for the Pacific and Regional Affairs of Australia-HE.Ewen McDonald, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Niue-HE Makoto Osawa, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Niue-HE Kira Christianne D Azucena and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Niue-HE Wang Xialong

Niue achieved self-governance from New Zealand in 1974 and is one of three New Zealand realm countries.
