We must continue to work together to build a brighter future says PM Tagelagi during 50th Commemoration Speech

It was a day of celebration and reflection bringing thousands from all over the world to honor their rich history and traditions of the island paradise

Thousands of local Niueans and those from abroad converged at the Hanan international airport to commemorate the nations 50 years of self-government last Saturday-October 19, 2024.

Despite the heavy downpour, thunderstorm and strong winds on Saturday morning that caused the postponement of the event twice, the skies began to clear later in the day with the event scheduled for 1pm instead of the initial time at10am.

Before his speech, Prime Minister Hon. Dalton Tagelagi was adorned with a beautiful tiputa cloak created by Niuean Hiapo practitioner Cora-Allan Lafaiki Twiss of Alofi-Tokelau and Liku.

He welcomed the New Zealand Governor General-The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro and other international dignitaries and invited guests present during the event.

“This 50th anniversary is particularly special, for it demonstrates the fortitude and determination of Niueans who sought to shape their own destiny while maintaining the steadfast connection with our closest partner New Zealand,” said Hon. Tagelagi.

Tagelagi added that Niue and New Zealand share a unique bond that is enriched by our deep cultural, historical, and community ties. Extending his gratitude to the people of Niue for their long-standing resilience and tireless contributions to the country.

Tagelagi acknowledged the contribution of past leaders, the hardworking Niueans who work in the various sectors of health, education, conservation, the arts amongst others.

He highlighted the various developments that have taken place in the various sectors.He took time to thanks all our development partners for their ongoing commitment to the growth and development to the island and the diplomatic partners who have supported the journey towards a prosperous Niue.

“We must continue to work together to build a brighter future for Niue and forge a path forward for the next 50 years , and nurture our shared diplomatic relationship and ongoing investment in Niue’s people and infrastructure.” he emphasized.

As Niue looks to the future, Tagelagi says to honour the journey we have taken together we must
continue to build on Niue’s legacy for future generations.
