HMNZS Manawanui sinks off the coast of Samoa
The Manawanui was scheduled to visit Niue next week for the constitution celebrations.
The HMNZS Manawanui of the New Zealand Royal Navy fleet ran aground and sank off the coast of the village of Siumu in Samoa over the weekend.
The Manawanui was last here in Niue in November last year as part of the Calypso project and was scheduled to visit Niue next week for the constitution celebrations. The crew were also going to help with the Cool Roof project next week.
According to media reports from New Zealand, one of the last activities of the Manawanui was to survey the wreck of a Taiwanese fishing boat which sank at Beveridge Reef in 2022.
During its visit to Niue last year, BCN News spoke with Commander Yvonne Gray.
Our thoughts are with Commander Gray and her crew as the investigation into what happened continues.
