100 percent import tariff on vehicles 15 years or older

Importing vehicles 15 years or older models will incur a 100 percent tariff or $5,000 per vehicle - Customs notice

The tariff for importing vehicles that are 15 years and older is 100 percent or $5,000 per vehicle, whichever is the highest amount according to a public notice issued earlier this month by the Customs department.

To comply with the government’s tariffs, for those looking to bring in older vehicles, while the cost of the vehicle may be cheaper, the import tariff takes into account the environmental cost as well as the roadworthy and safety requirements.

According to Matsons local agent Frank and Sons, one hundred and ninety four (194) vehicles were imported to the island in 2024. Since the beginning of this year, seventy four (74) vehicles have been shipped to Niue. It is not clear how many of these vehicles are 15 years or older.

In a public notice issued on the 16th of June, the Customs Office advised members of the public to ensure they comply with the laws to avoid disappointment at the border.

Importers are strongly encouraged to consult with the Niue Customs Office before arranging any shipments.

This is to ensure that all the necessary requirements are understood and complied with and also to avoid any disappointment should there be further penalties imposed or your vehicle will be refused entry at the border.
