Lightning storm caused power outage and damage to ISP equipment

Local ISP Kaniu equipment damaged due to lightning storm last night PC - Kaniu

Several homes went without power on the east coast as a result of the lightning storm last night. Some residents of Lakepa were still waiting for their power to be restored this morning.

Meanwhile, the lightning storm caused damage to internet services with local ISP Kaniu and Telecom Niue confirming equipment damage.

Owner of local internet service provider Kaniu, Emani Fakaotimanava-Lui posted on social media this morning Apologies to our Lakepa clients for the wifi outage. Lightning storm last night damaged our equipment. We are unable to climb the 40m tower until tomorrow due to bad weather. Sadly, we had just climbed last Friday and replaced 2 wifi equipment”.

Fakaotimanava-Lui told BCN News that they had just replaced the WiFi equipment last Friday and was damaged again due to the lightning. He said ‘weather permitting’ they will replace it again tomorrow.

Telecom Niue CEO Anurag Tandom confirmed this morning that the lightning storm damaged some of their equipment on the east coast. 

The damage caused disruption to Telecom services for a couple of hours. The telecom team was able to fix the damaged equipment with spare parts available and restored service.
