Search for families of Niue’s 7 coast-watchers continues
Since 2022, NZDF has been working to identify these coast watchers and provide their families with recognition for their service

According to a news article by PMN Niue last month, ongoing efforts have surfaced to recognize Pacific Islanders involved in coast watching during World War II. This includes seven young Niuean men that served during this period
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) post states “These men worked tirelessly to safeguard and protect during the Second World War, and the Defence Force wishes to honour their service with special recognition,”
With the assistance of local historian Birtha Togahai, the seven men are:
1.)Ikitagaloa.SIONEPULU 18 years of Hakupu
2.) Kofe Matatupu HASINI (elder of twins) 18 of Alofi
3.)Molisoni Pimeleko IAFETA 26 of Mutalau
4.)Mose LAGATUKI 18 of Liku
5.)Ponaniu Fisihega PAFALANI (younger of twins) 18 of Hikutavake
6.)Sione TAMATI 21 of Tuapa
7.Tulagi KAUFITI 19 of Vaiea
Since 2022, NZDF has been working to identify these coast watchers and provide their families with recognition for their service during the war.
According to the statement, the coastwatching system was set up in 1941 and acted as one of the first lines of defence for New Zealand during WWII.
