Plans to establish a Australia and Niue friendship Day

As Australia seeks to deepen its ties across the Pacific, she shared that there are plans to establish an Australia and Niue Friendship Day

New Australian High Commissioner- HE Olivia Phongkham is settling in comfortably since taking up her new diplomatic role last December. 

She brings with her 20 years of experience as a career officer with various Australian Government departments including the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She is no stranger here as she has visited Niue in her  previous role as s an adviser to the PACER Plus Implementation Unit based in Samoa.

She shares with BCN News on how her experience has been so far.

As Australia seeks to deepen its ties across the Pacific, she shared on key priorities the Australian Government will look to strengthen with Niue, including plans to establish an Australia and Niue Friendship Day. 

Phongkham also spoke on the recent withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organisation, the Paris Agreement and a freeze to USAID. 

“So in terms of Australia, we staying committed to the Paris Agreement, to the WHO and in terms of our development assistance we want to be a partner of choice for neighboring countries”

She also shared that they have just released on their website the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship 2026 with 1 intake per year. Application Deadline will close on April 29, 2025.

The commission has a staff of four with two full time and part time workers. This is the fifth year of the commissions establishmemt in Niue.
