To mark World Radio Day this year, just over six hundred radios were gifted today to every household on the island. National broadcaster BCN and the Associate Minister of Broadcasting Hon. Esa Mona Ainuu distributed the radios this morning, through the kind donations of the People’s Republic of China.
Minister Ainuu, a former journalist, spoke about the significance of Radio in providing information and keeping our population updated on what is happening around the island. She said that radio is still the preferred source of information for many, especially the elderly.
Alofi South village councillor Ettie Pasene-Mizziebo said that Niue is very fortunate to get the gift of free radios for each household, thanking the PRC for this generous gift. Mizziebo said that she listens to the radio all the time because she loves music and the radio is her main source of information about what is happening in Niue.

The General Manager of BCN, Trevor Tiakia said that they realise how valuable a radio is to a household and especially during cyclones or any disaster and he is grateful to the People’s Republic of China for the generous donation.
The only radio station in Niue, Radio Sunshine is part of the BCN team and today is an opportunity to thank our radio staff, from the producers, technicians, news presenters and announcers for their dedication to radio services.
One of the radio announcers is Reverend Diamond Tauevihi who said that working on radio is about making sure the Vagahau Niue is heard every day on national radio. She said that her fans tell her how good it is to listen to Niuean music and announcers speaking Vagahau on air.

BCN is also looking to recruit new radio announcers and today the village council representatives were asked to assist by speaking to the young people in their villages and encourage them to apply.
We also take this opportunity to thank former Radio Sunshine announcers for your service in past years.
