In a statment last night on their NZ High Commission to Niue Facebook post,19 October 2024 marks 50 years of Niue’s self-governance in free association with New Zealand.
It states the special constitutional partnership between New Zealand and Niue is built on whanaungatanga, shared values, and a shared history.
In celebration of this significant milestone, NZ High Commissioner to Niue-HE. Mark Gibb announced last night a further package of support for development in Niue.
The funding will be used to commission a comprehensive feasibility study into the redevelopment of Sir Robert Rex’s Wharf – a necessary step to progress plans to strengthen Niue’s critical infrastructure to better withstand our changing climate.
A total of $250,000 will also be provided to Tāoga Niue, Niue’s department responsible for preserving and promoting Niue’s language, culture, and heritage, to ensure future generations can continue to celebrate and learn from their history.
The statement concludes that New Zealand looks forward to continuing to grow their special relationship with Niue and strengthening the deep bonds that unite the two nations in many years to come.
