Less than seven days remain until the presidential elections in the United States with reports that the two main presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are neck and neck nationwide and in battleground states.

According to FiveThirtyEight’s daily election poll tracker, as of Wednesday Vice President Kamala Harris is leading in the national polls with a 1.9 percentage point lead over former President-DonaldTrump.

So how will the outcome of the presidential elections impact Niue and what are the US’s interests in Niue? United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa Tom Udall spoke to BCN News this month.

“Whatever happens in the Presidential elections our foreign policy will change a little bit but for the most part be about helping and working with democracies, help bring countries up and putting a variety of programs in place to help people prosper. I don’t envision any big changes between the relationship with Niue and the United States as a result of the Presidential elections.” he added

The 2024 United States Presidential elections is scheduled to be held next Tuesday, November 5, 2024. During this presidential election year, the president and vice president will be elected.

Meanwhile geopolitical tensions continue to brew in the Pacific between the United States and China as both countries continue to expand their economic ties and security interests with Pacific Island nations.
