And on our developing Starlink geo-block coverage from last week, after we ran the story there were a lot of reactions on our BCN Facebook page on the story from people comparing Telecom Niue Internet prices to Starlink Operation.
BCN News reached out to Telecom Niue CEO Anurag Tandon regarding Starlinks and here is his statement:
Tandon states “Telecom Niue acknowledges the Government of Niue’s recent decision to restrict the availability and operation of StarLink services within the country. As the primary telecommunications provider in Niue, we are committed to ensuring the highest standards of connectivity and service for our community.
He further states that The Government’s decision is driven by several key considerations including Regulatory Compliance, and Local Investment Protection: Protecting the investments made in local telecommunications infrastructure and services, which are crucial for the island’s economic and social development.
Tandon also mentioned Security Concerns: Addressing national security concerns related to the control and management of data and communications infrastructure.
Meanwhile, one of the Starlink users on the island Glen Jackson said “It is clear that the government is protecting one of its assets, Telecom Niue, to generate income. However, this also creates a monopoly. I believe that having competition in the same space is healthy for any economy”
Telecom CEO Anurag Tandon added they will continue to work closely with the Government of Niue to align our strategies and operations with national priorities and regulations. Our goal is to ensure that Niue remains connected to the world in a secure, efficient, and sustainable manner.
