A session of the Niue Legislative Assembly will be taking place tomorrow Wednesday -May 1st starting at 9am. This was confirmed in a government press release issued this morning.
The important matter that will come before the House is the second reading of the Constitution Amendment Bills.
There must be a two-thirds majority for the Bills to pass, that means no less than 13 Members of the Assembly must vote in favor of the amendments.
If the Bills pass the second reading, there will be a 13 week interval before they can return to the Assembly for the final meeting. If the bills pass the third and final reading, it will be referred to a referendum. This provides an opportunity for all qualified electors on the island to decide on the amendments.
It is expected that the referendum will be held in August.
The Assembly sitting will be live on our Radio Sunshine tomorrow.
