The Niue Disaster Management Office held a Fun Day open to all kids last Wednesday with about forty kids showing up.
This was to end off a two weeks of work experience for five high school students who were provided emergency and basic lifesaving skills working at NDMO during the school holidays.
NDMO Assistant Manager Heileen Togiamana says it’s all about teaching the students about what it’s like to have a real job.
Niue High School Year 10 student, Khanden Pihigia said his favorite activity was cutting down the trees and learning how to properly tie a knot.
Chamelia Siakimotu said her favorite activity during the week was the swimming lessons at Limu Pools where they were taught life saving skills if they were ever in danger in the water.
The program was focused on exposing the students to emergency response activities such as swimming skills, driving lessons, tree cutting and first aid training. This also included a stint at the airport operations and functions.
“The students were exposed to all in the two weeks and that’s what we really wanted was to let them see what it’s really like to have a work life and we actually had feedback from these five students the difference when they return home,” said Togiamana
She said they hope the students will head back home and impart all these skills with their families and friends.
NDMO will be selecting five more students to go through the program by the end of the year.
