The Niue National Commission for UNESCO and the Taoga Niue Council Vagahau Niue Social Media Competition was launched last week in celebration of the International Mother Language Day which was on Monday 21st of February.
The competition called for all the youth of Niue to create a short video in Vagahau Niue based on the theme “using technology to enhance Vagahau Niue”. The video needed to apply basic Vagahau Niue phrases, promote and enhance the role of teachers, and effectively use social media to support Vagahau Niue teaching and learning.
Head of the Niue Language Commission Sifa Ioane told BCN news that the competition was a way for the youth to enhance Vagahau Niue through social media in a way that is fun and interactive for the young people.
The participants were given until midday on Monday this week to upload their videos to social media and as of the deadline, eight entries were uploaded.
Yesterday the competition organisers hosted a Prize Giving ceremony for the winners and entries of the competition which was held at the Taoga Niue building when the competition winners the Early Childhood Education teachers took out first prize.
BCN news understands that there were only eight entries in total. All other entries also received consolation prizes as well as a Monolingual Tohi Vagahau Niue.
Despite the low number of entries also due to the short notice, Mrs. Ioane said that she is looking forward to seeing more interaction from our youth in further developing Vagahau Niue learning and teaching through such events.
Well done to all the winners and entries for the competition!
