95% of children aged 5 to 11 years receive their first dose of the Paediatric vaccine last week

To vaccinate or not vaccinate? Was a common feeling amongst parents when the Niue health department had announced the Paediatric vaccination rollout for children aged 5 to 11 years old would begin on the 14th of February.

Last month, BCN news reached out to some parents to share their thoughts regarding the vaccination, most responded with ‘mixed feelings’ saying that their major concern were the effects it would have on their children.

However, most of their concerns were reassured as seen by the results of the first doses administered last week with 95% of the more than 200 children on the island aged 5 to 11 year olds. Those vaccinated will wait eight weeks before taking their second dose.

This was a huge success for the health department as it showed their efforts in making the vaccine bearable for the little ones were successful.

These efforts could also be seen through the superhero theme decorations throughout the hospital and courtyard, coloured with balloons and superhero character cutouts.

As children walked into the hospital they were welcomed by cheerful staff and cartoons playing on a TV screen.

There were also colouring stations and a TV screen showing cartoons to keep the children entertained, especially during the 20 minute waiting process post-vaccination.

According to the health department, 207 children were vaccinated at the hospital and 3 of the children received their vaccines in New Zealand while they were there.

Thank you Niue health team for all your efforts in continuing to protect our communities and children from COVID-19.
