Niue Post and some local businesses are not leaving anything to chance by making decisions to protect the island from the very infectious Delta variant of COVID 19 which has forced New Zealand into a nationwide lockdown.
Niue post has implemented a three-day quarantine for all airmailed post that arrived on the Air New Zealand flight that arrived on Monday this week 23rd August.
According to the notice on the Niue Development Bank Facebook page, the decision to quarantine the airmail is because of the Covid 19 level 4 lockdown alerts in New Zealand right now.
The inbound airmailed from the flight on Monday will be released on Thursday this week 26th August at 10am.
BCN news is also aware of a grocery store that cancelled their order of fresh fruit and vegetables on the last flight due to the increasing number of Delta variant community cases in Auckland.
The grocer told BCN news that their suppliers in Auckland had been tested but that they were waiting for the results which will be released sometime this week.
They made the decision to cancel their supplies because of the very serious and highly infectious delta variant in New Zealand and in Auckland where their suppliers are located.
As of today August 26th local time, there are 210 cases in New Zealand, 62 community cases in the past 24 hours with hundreds of locations of interest including ten schools, the latest is Otahuhu College.
Weekly flights from Auckland will arrive on Mondays but will not be carrying passengers until further notice. Premier Tagelagi told BCN news last week, that it is necessary for the flights to continue to bring in cargo and for Niue passengers to fly to NZ should they need to.
Eight passengers left the island on Monday including the team of three from the New Zealand government.
