No road accidents over the festive period but two accidents on Sunday morning
The Police confirmed this morning that there were no motor vehicle accidents during the festive season through Christmas and New Year period.
However, there was an accident in the early hours of Sunday morning and the Police have confirmed that they have started their investigation into that accident which happened on the road between Alofi and Liku/Lakepa.
There was also an accident involving a Hiab crane truck yesterday morning at Fonuakula industrial park. The truck which was transporting the vehicle involved in the accident on the road between Alofi and Liku/Lakepa got into a bit of trouble.
The Hiab crane truck tipped over on its side while the driver was attempting to remove the van from the truck.
BCN News understand that residents of nearby Huihui were wondering why the heavy machinery was operating on Sunday morning because they could hear the large Hiab crane.
According to the Police there were no injuries in this accident however the incident required the use of the government’s heavy machinery to the rescue.
It’s understood the Hiab crane truck involved in this accident is one of Telecom Niue’s new fleet of heavy machinery.
Niue Police have yet to respond to questions from BCN News about the licensing requirements for drivers of heavy machinery and whether these requirements are benchmarked against New Zealand standards.
