At 6pm today the National Disaster Council issued Blue Alert level for Niue Sunday 13th December 2020.
Blue alert means that a cyclone is in the area and precautionary measures must commence preparing for strong winds and heavy rains. Sir Robert’s Wharf and all sea tracks are closed until further notice. Canoes have been relocated to higher grounds for the villages on the west coast.
The notification received from the Office of the Secretary to Government advising the public that Tropical Cyclone Zazu is in the area and the outflow has started to affect the island. Located at M11 on the Niue Cyclone Tracking Map.
At 5 minutes to 6 pm, the Niue Metrological Office issued the latest Special Weather Bulletin (SWB) number 9 issued at 5.15 pm on Tropical Cyclone Zazu located about 460km west-northwest of Niue at midday today. Close to the centre the cyclone is expected to have average winds of up to 65km per hour.
On this track, TC Zazu is expected to be located about 480km west of Niue at 1 am tomorrow and about 420km west of Niue at 1 pm tomorrow Monday 14th December.
The Met Office will be issuing the next SWB at around 8.30pm tonight.
