Telecom Niue has come to the rescue of 10 employees of the Scenic Matavai Resort which closed last month.
According to Telecom Niues CEO Brett Collier, the ten employees are on a secondment program under one of Telecom MFAT funded projects.
Collier said he contacted MFAT and was given the go ahead to offer the opportunities to those who would’ve otherwise lost their jobs because of the impacts of COVID 19.
The staff are employed in various areas of Telecoms, some are working in customer services, some are working with their labour intensive outdoors teams.
The secondment program initially started off with 3 months but according to Collier, the Telecom Board has approved an extension of up to six months, because there is no telling how long these changes to the tourism industry will last.
The employees are working 30 hours per week. Brett Collier says that they have started with the staff of Scenic Matavai but if there is anyone out there who used to work in the Tourism sector but have lost their work, they can contact Telecom about this secondment program.
He said this is Telecom Niue’s contribution to helping the community during these tough economic times.
