Flights in and out of Niue over the weekend were canceled due to two different tropical cyclones.
First it was Category 2 TC Vicky expected to be closest to Niue on Friday and Category 1 TC Wasi expected to be closest at 40 km south of Niue on Sunday.
Responding to BCN News, Air NZ stated “NZ784 from Auckland to Niue was cancelled on Saturday due to Tropical Cyclone Vicky. We were due to operate a recovery flight yesterday to accommodate disrupted passengers but this was cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Wasi”
At the Airport this morning, BCN News spoke to a few passengers who were originally meant to leave last Friday and how the cancelled flights had affected their plans. Jackie Godsmark was quite thrilled that the flights were cancelled
Tom from Wellington was not unhappy about having a few extra days in Niue for some snorkelling
According to the Air NZ email this morning “ Their scheduled service today from Auckland to Niue will be operated by the larger A321 neo aircraft and all customers have either been accommodated on this service or a service later in the week”
The A321 neo aircraft arriving today can carry a maximum of 244 passengers.
According to Air New Zealand, passengers did not incur additional costs to be accommodated on today’s flight and the Friday flight this week.
