New barge worth 800 thousand dollars for Niue
A new barge is expected to arrive in Niue in the very near future says Advisor to Premier, Wayne Harris Dawes.
Brand new and made in Fiji, the barge has a carrying capacity of 56 tonnes with a dry weight of 22 tonnes. Self draining and self propelled it is expected to benefit Niue with reducing fuel costs and time spent off loading containers.
Dawes anticipates the barge to sail to Niue following completion stages in August.
Where the barge will be housed is another topic of discussion with talks engaged today. As part of the NZ aid overall for the port upgrade which included the procurement of the 95 tonne crane, the barge has an estimated value of $800,000 fit for oceanic voyaging.
